Hello, I am Jody and I recently moved to Merritt from the Gitxsan and Wet’su’wet’en territories of Northern BC in July of 2024. I humbly, respectfully, and gratefully acknowledge that I now work, live, and play on the traditional unceded, and ancestral territories of the Nlaka’pamux and Syilx Nations. I adore my new community; it already feels like home.
I have lived and experienced many amazing opportunities throughout my life. Prior to training as a therapist, I was a high school educator for 20 years where I got to explore visual arts and drama, information technology, sex education, literature, etc. In 2021, I moved into school counselling with predominantly indigenous youth ages 13-19. I carry a BA in English and Psychology from UNBC, a post degree teaching certificate from Simon Fraser University, and a master's in counselling psychology through Yorkville University. I carry professional certificates in Basic EMDR and Indigenous Focus Oriented Therapy.
All these life, educational, and professional experiences have molded my belief that we each carry the power within us to change our lives for the better. I approach counselling from a feminist, trauma informed, indigenous lens and work from a strength-based approach that highlights resiliency and empowers my clients towards hope and healing. I am client centered so our time together is what you need it to be, based on goals you set.
When I am not at work, I adore reading, art and crafting, indoor houseplant gardening, spending time with family, friends and my two yorkie dogs, experimental cooking, taking in a live concert, and travelling to exploring my surroundings.
“All that we are is story. From the moment we are born to the time we continue on our spirit journey, we are involved in the creation of the story of our time here. It is what we arrive with. It is all we leave behind. We are not the things we accumulate. We are not the things we deem important. We are story. All of us. What comes to matter then is the creation of the best possible story we can while we’re here; you, me, us, together. When we can do that and we take the time to share those stories with each other, we get bigger inside, we see each other, we recognize our kinship – we change the world, one story at a time…”
